Actually, it's based on an enemy type from the Metroid Prime games. It says that in the descriptions on both MOCpages and Flickr, as a matter of fact. Though the build has nothing to do with surrealism (and I'm not sure whether what you wrote is a compliment or not) intentionally, one might argue that the ideas the designers had for it were rooted in such art.
